Why Every Advisor Needs a “Room Like This”
I spent the last couple of days at a symposium hosted by LiveOak Bank, where I was part of a panel on how to achieve a great multiple and maximize the value of your business, one session within a broader conversation on M&A and succession planning.
Yes, there were plenty of sharp insights. There were conversations around deal structures, valuation trends, and the evolving landscape of succession planning. The kind of content you’d expect from a room full of business consultants and industry specialists.
But that’s not actually what stuck with me. What stuck with me was the room itself.
Because this wasn’t a typical industry event. Most of the conferences I attend are designed for financial advisors, which are, without question, valuable.
But this one was different. This was a room full of people who spend their time thinking about how advisory businesses grow, evolve, and ultimately transition.
In other words, a room full of consultant nerds. And I mean that with a lot of respect. Many of us are just as invested in the advisors we support as those advisors are in their own clients.
We were talking Cerulli data like sports stats. Debating how to make CRM systems actually drive behavior, not just track it. And sharing real-world challenges, from getting advisors to start succession planning earlier to developing the next generation.
The conversations were practical and incredibly energizing. Because when you’re in a room like that, something happens. Ideas sharpen and assumptions get challenged. You leave not just with notes, but with momentum.
That’s what I walked away with.
Not just “here are three trends in M&A,” but a renewed sense of how much better we all get when we’re surrounded by people pushing at the same problems from different angles.
So here’s the challenge for any advisor reading this…
Succession planning, business optimization, and long-term growth aren’t areas you tackle in isolation or quickly. They improve the earlier you start thinking about them, and the more perspectives you bring into the conversation.
Which is why every advisor needs their version of “a room like this.”
It doesn’t have to be a formal symposium. It might be a small peer group. A handful of advisors you trust. A coach or consultant who pushes your thinking. Even one or two people who are slightly ahead of you, willing to share what’s working and what isn’t.
What matters is the environment.
Are you in conversations that challenge how you’re running your business?
Are you hearing how others are approaching growth, succession, and client relationships in ways you haven’t considered?
Are you giving yourself space to think beyond the immediate and into what this business looks like five, ten, fifteen years from now?
Because here’s the reality. The advisors who build the most valuable, sustainable businesses aren’t just executing well day-to-day. They are intentional about how those businesses evolve over time.
And that kind of thinking rarely happens alone. It happens in rooms where ideas are shared freely. Where assumptions are questioned. Where someone says, “Have you thought about doing it this way?” and suddenly you can’t unsee the opportunity. That’s what I experienced this week.
And if there’s one takeaway worth sharing, it’s this:
Find your room. Because the advisors who get succession planning right rarely start with a plan. They start with better conversations, earlier than they think they need to.
And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly where we can help. A lot of what we’re building right now, from workshops to Growth Lab resources, is designed to create these kinds of environments for advisors. The goal isn’t just content—it’s connection, perspective, and momentum.
Reach out to your Beacon wholesaler. They can help you plug into the right conversations, whether that’s a workshop, a small group, or something more tailored to where you are in your business.
Because the right room doesn’t just give you ideas. It changes how you think about what’s possible.
